Chromium is an essential trace mineral, important in processing carbohydrates and fats, and helping cells respond properly to insulin. Some research suggests that Chromium Picolinate can help reduce blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.
What is chromium picolinate
Chromium picolinate is a combination of the trace mineral chromium and picolinic acid. Picolinic acid is a natural metabolite (a naturally occurring product of metabolism) found in breast milk. Chromium supplied in this form is more easily absorbed and used by the body.
Research has established that chromium picolinate is safe at levels as high as 500 mg, or 500,000 mcg, in animals, which is more than 500 times the typical daily dose for an average adult (not recommended).
Chromium Has No Benefits for Obese Westerners With Poorly Controlled Type 2 Diabetes
46 people with type 2 diabetes took insulin to treat their diabetes. They were from the Netherlands. All were obese and around 60 years old.
The patients were put into one of three groups. One group took a small amount of chromium each day; another group took a large amount of chromium each day; and the third group took placebo daily.
After six months, there were no significant differences among the three groups. Each group had a very small decrease in their blood glucose levels, and there were no changes in their blood pressure, the amount of fats in their blood, their weight, or the amount of insulin they had to take.
